Activating Downtown Wixom: Alleyway Transformation Lights Up to Welcome the Community Image

Downtown Wixom just became a little brighter — and a lot more inviting — thanks to the incredible efforts of the Downtown Development Authority’s (DDA) Design Committee and a dedicated team of community volunteers.

The alley located between the Wixom Bar and the Klebba Building – Michigan Community Insurance Agency and CFV & Associates Inc. – has long been an underutilized space with tremendous potential. Recognizing this, the DDA Design Committee developed a vision to activate the alley and integrate it into the vibrant Junction Social District. Their plan included the addition of charming café lights, comfortable benches, colorful planter boxes, and fresh flowers to transform the space into a welcoming, pedestrian-friendly destination.

On Sunday, June 29th, twelve enthusiastic volunteers devoted seven hours of their weekend to bring this vision to life. Working side by side, they installed the benches and planters, hung strings of café lights, and planted flowers to infuse the alley with color and warmth. The result is a beautifully reimagined passageway that not only connects people but also encourages them to pause, gather, and enjoy downtown Wixom in a whole new way.

The activation of this alley is more than just an aesthetic improvement. Across the country, downtown alleyways have been rediscovered as hidden gems with the power to support local economies. When thoughtfully designed, alleys can become vibrant spaces for dining, gathering, and public art — increasing foot traffic and encouraging visitors to linger, explore, and support nearby businesses. By drawing people in and creating a memorable experience, activated alleyways help drive economic impact and strengthen a community’s sense of place.

The refreshed Wixom alley does exactly that. As part of the Junction Social District, it adds to the overall charm and appeal of downtown Wixom, making it a more attractive destination for residents and visitors alike. Small but impactful enhancements like this project show how even overlooked spaces can make a meaningful difference in building a thriving, connected downtown.

Thanks to the leadership of the DDA Design Committee, the hard work of community volunteers, the support of the owners of Michigan Community Insurance Agency, CFV & Associates Inc, and Wixom Bar the alley is now a bright, beautiful symbol of what is possible when a community comes together to invest in its shared spaces.
